Project Description

The Concrete Canoe Competition is an event sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Teams participating are required to design and fabricate a canoe comprised solely of concrete and other cementitious materials.

These canoes must be made in accordance with the standards presented by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and follow the rules and regulations set by the ASCE. The specifications for this year’s competition can be found on the Rules and Regulations page of this site.

On competition day, teams are challenged to compete in five different races. These include: Men and Women’s slalom, Men and Women’s sprint; and a Co-Ed sprint.

Competing teams evaluated by official judges for different components of the overall project. Final report, theme, appearance, aesthetics, and race performances will all be taken into consideration by the judges.

In order to successfully build our canoe, the team must construct a concrete mix that is light enough to stay afloat, but also strong enough to safely travel to NJIT and complete the races on competition day. The hull and overall boat dimensions are also key components for the project and, in the end, a successful race day.
