This project focused on the redesign of hydraulic and transportation components along County Road Route 626\/Lomason’s Glen Road and Bridge No. 23073 (the culvert) over Buckhorn Creek Tributary in White Township, New Jersey. A large storm event in 2022 caused total road failure downstream of the culvert, and sections of the roadway collapsed on the tributary side of Lomason’s Glen Road, resulting in road closure. The project focus is to improve scour protection along the embankments, redesigning the culvert to prevent overtopping, and a roundabout design. Gabion baskets were selected for scour due to their affordability, lower environmental impact, and less maintenance than a levee wall. The runoff volume was calculated using a curve number of 0.3, drainage area of 1.13 square miles, and a rainfall intensity of 3 in\/hr, resulting in an estimated peak flow 100 cfs. For the culvert redesign, a rectangular open-bottom culvert was favored for its higher flow rate and preserving ecological balance over a closed bottom culvert. For the traffic design, a roundabout was considered at Belvidere Road & Lomason\u2019s Glen Road. With a peak hour traffic flow of 862 vehicles and a 50 mph speed limit on Belvidere Road, a roundabout was selected for that intersection to calm traffic flow and improve safety. Altering the roadway geometry to add pedestrian\/bicycle lanes was considered, but due to spatial constraints, increasing existing signage and reevaluating sight distance is more crucial. The estimated fall and spring engineering service costs were $23,000 and $25,000 respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
