Third Alternative Design
Alternative Designs
At this point in the design process, our team has developed a few preliminary alternative designs for our roadway redesign. Considering all aspects of the roadway such as traffic volumes, ease of access as well as codes and requirements, our preliminary designs reflect a safe and efficient redesign. Currently we are deciding which will be considered as a final design and are working to develop CAD drawings as well as VISIM models to better represent the ideas as well as their effectiveness.

Third Update – Obtaining Plans
On Monday 10/3, the group e-mailed NJDOT in order to obtain construction plans related to the project. Specifically for the roadway, we requested construction plans, profiles, and grades. For the overpass, we requested plans for the abutments, bearing plan, framing, steel detail, and deck cross section. NJDOT was able to provide the roadway plans, but informed us that the overpass is a NJTA structure, and we would have to reach out to the NJTA for these plans. We e-mailed the NJTA, and are awaiting a reply.
Second Update – Traffic Counts
Monday, the group used the NJDOT website to find traffic count data for the site. The traffic count data was found for 24 hour periods in six different locations. This data will be used to create the optimal design for the intersections as well as for traffic signal optimization. In addition charts were created for each location. An example of this can be seen below.
First update!
After meeting with our project advisors, Dr. Thomas Brennan and Dr. Andrew Bechtel, we have decided to split up the project tasks in the following way:
Anthony – Traffic Signal Optimization
Nicholas – Naricon Place and Route 18 Intersection Improvements
Michael – Horizontal and Vertical Curve Design
Christopher – Roundabout Design near Route 1/Route 18 Interchange
Max – Widening of the Turnpike Overpass
