The polyethylene foam-lined armpit support and handle has increased surface area relative to axillary crutches, reducing pressures at the device-user interfaces. Polyethylene foam was selected for its high level of cushioning that contributes to an ergonomic feel.
Axillary crutches have a total device-user interface area of around 106.4 cm2 (axillary support and handle combined). The Ergo-Crutch offers a total device-user interface area of 341 cm2.
The indents in the axillary support were designed to interface seamlessly with the load cells implemented in the electronic system.
