The steering will be designed to the specifications of two-wheel Ackerman steering in order to optimize the turning radius of the bike, and allow it to fit the ASME HPVC rules and guidelines. Anthropometrics and ergonomics will be taken into heavy consideration when designing the steering mechanism, as it is necessary for the rider to comfortably ride the bike for long periods of time.&nbsp; Adjustability will also be a factor in the final design choice.&nbsp; The steering will be driven by one of the following three options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conventional steering column and wheel <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knuckle-mounted handlebars<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under-seat mounted handlebars<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;The existing bike from this past year (which uses knuckle handlebars) will be tested to determine which of the three systems will be implemented.&nbsp; Front wheel braking will be accomplished by using stock disk brakes, mounted on the steering wheel or the handlebars, depending on which option will be chosen for the final design.&nbsp; Back wheel braking will be accomplished with a stock over-wheel mounted caliper brake.&nbsp; The brakes will be selected and thorough analysis will be performed so that the stopping distance requirement, outlined by the ASME, will be met. Both the steering and braking systems must not interfere with each other, the other systems of the vehicle, nor the comfort of the rider so the vehicle operates efficiently and safely.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interim Design (10\/28\/20)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The three steering mechanisms listed above were considered to implement in this year&#8217;s vehicle. The videos below show brief examples of the steering geometry in motion.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Design (1\/26\/21)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Major Design Components<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Under-seat handlebars coupled to pitman arm beneath seat carriage<\/li>\n<li>Pitman arm pushes adjustable longitudinal tie rods, which rotate the bell crank<\/li>\n<li>Button-pin used to adjust the tie rods simultaneously with the adjustable seating<\/li>\n<li>Bell crank translates longitudinal motion to lateral motion through the push\/pull of
