pGrip Subsystems

Glove

About 250,000 individuals in the United States suffer from Muscular Dystrophy, and related diseases. These individuals may experience great trouble with gripping common household objects. Current devices do exist, however, are not accessible due to a high price range of $2000-$4000.

Anti Tremor

Seven million individuals in the United States suffer from some sort of essential tremor. Devices to help reduce these tremors exist, but they can be bulky and heavy. Currently, there is no such device on the market that can accomplish grip assistance and anti tremor capabilities simultaneously. Our goal is to create an anti tremor device that is compatible with our grip assist. We also aim to decrease the cost for such a device, as current products can range from $500-$900.

Essential tremor – A nervous system disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking due to fatigue, most often affecting the hands.

Controls System

Since the pGrip is marketed to those who have less physical ability than the average person, it was a design goal of the team to have the device grant as much ability and independence back to the user as possible. While the device will be harder to design and construct, it was decided to incorporate an electrical system that was controlled by sensors rather than just onboard switches and buttons, remote controls, or a smartphone app. This ensured that the device would be as seamless as possible, mimicking the function and feel of a normal hand to the user.
