Background

The bed lift is a device typically used in hospitals to lift patients from a wheelchair into a bed.

There are several different devices on the market today, most notably the Hoyer lift and GRAVIS floor lift.

Among the floor-based lifts many nurses have voiced concern over back injuries resulting from strain in moving the patient. This is also backed by research, with nurses suffering moderate to severe lower back injury due to the operation and adjustment of these lifts [1,2]

Based on this understanding of floor-based lifts, it can be concluded that these devices are not able to meet patient needs, in addition to resulting in many injuries.
