What is the SOLAR SPLASH® competition?

SOLAR SPLASH® is the World Championship of Collegiate Solar Boating, and it takes place over five days. Technical Inspections are done on the first day, and the remainder of the time is occupied by three on-the-water competitive events. Points are earned in six categories starting with Technical reports and Video presentations that are submitted before teams arrive at the competition. Workmanship is scored on-site. On-the-water events include the Slalom, which is a combination of speed and maneuverability, and the Sprint and Endurance events.

The College of New Jersey has been competing in the SOLAR SPLASH® competition on and off since 1999, with the 2025/2026 team planning to go to competition.

The TCNJ 2025/2026 Boat Plan

The College of New Jersey’s 2025/2026 Solar Splash team aims to go to this year’s competition from June 2nd through June 6th, located in Springfield, Ohio. To achieve this, the team is focusing on revising five major aspects: the drivetrain system, the steering system, the electrical system, the data acquisition system, and the weight distribution of the boat. While the hull of the boat is to remain unchanged, each of these systems is planned to be majorly reworked and improved. Shown below is the current iteration of our Gantt chart.
