Our Project

Our device aims to create a way for individuals to reduce the risk of poor venous return in the lower extremities due to long duration sitting. Various indicators such as a volume and temperature increase are correlates of the development of VTE and will be monitored by the device to trigger prophylactic action. The design solution included selecting an infrared temperature sensor to monitor temperature, and an RGB sensor utilized to detect a volume increase,  connected to an arduino uno that controls a micro air pump to induce pneumatic intermittent compression on the lower leg. After compression is induced and the sensors measure the correlates return back to the baseline values, the compression ceases. Monitoring the symptoms of the development of VTE, mobility, and the prophylactic action, are novel aspects of the device in comparison to existing solutions.

Why This Is Important:

Average $15,123 annually per patient for treatment of VTEIncreasing trend of treatment expense, and readmission treatment is even higher

  • VTE treatment expenses are increasing faster than the inflation of healthcare services

VTE is the 2nd most common medical complication

  • We aim to reduce risk of development of VTE and reduce overall healthcare expenditure on the treating of this disease state
