Project Description

Aerial map showing the location of the Meadows Apartments development near Washington Road and U.S. Route 1. The map highlights several critical intersections along Washington Road, including connections to Nursery Road, Tiber Lane, Thermal Drive, and the D&R Canal Path. Project Site Map

Washington Road is a critical corridor that connects Princeton University’s main campus, nearby neighborhoods, and Route 1. The roadway and its four major intersections and an additional crossing at the Delaware and Raritan Canal face growing safety and congestion issues as both pedestrian and vehicular traffic continue to increase. Connectivity between campuses and to the West Windsor suburb is limited, making it difficult for non-motorized travelers to move safely through the area. The Washington Road and Route 1 intersection, in particular, is highly complex, operates at high speeds, and has experienced 38 crashes within a four-year span, underscoring the urgent need for redevelopment.

Existing Conditions on Washington Road

This project aims to reimagine Washington Road as a Complete Street that prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist safety, reduces reliance on vehicles, and enhances overall connectivity. The scope of work includes a comprehensive redesign of the Washington Road corridor and its most critically affected intersections, including the Route 1 and Washington Road intersection, with improvements that integrate safe access to the Delaware and Raritan Canal Trail.
