Frame

Design Goals:

The weight of the vehicle should be minimal, as additional weight would require a greater output from the engine to reach its peak speed due to frictional and inertial forces. The vehicle should also be able to accommodate all the members of the team so all the members could drive the vehicle at competition to prevent fatigue on one driver. The frame and fairing were also to be design in tandem such that a full, integrated streamlined design could be created. Most if not all of the component should be manufacturable using TCNJ facilities.

Design:

The frame is a ladder frame design that consists of Aluminum 6061-T6 1” and 7/8” round and circular tube support members with wall thicknesses of 1/8” and 1/16”. Secondary members have a wall thickness of 1/16” and all other members have a thickness of ⅛”.  There is a 0.032” aluminum firewall that separates the driver from the engine, 1/4” thick dropouts for the back wheel. The total length of the frame is 87.5”, with a maximum width of 21” and a height of 21” at the roll hoop. The total length of the vehicle is 110”. The driver sits against the firewall at a 41° angle, which allows for enough room to see above his knees, and keep the maximum height of the vehicle less than the back wheel for a streamlined shape. The total weight of the frame is estimated to be 21 lbs.
