3. Final Product

The Final Product portion of the competition will include:

  • Overall canoe
  • Cutaway section
  • Product display

Canoe – The canoe will be judged based on its overall aesthetic appeal and durability and will incur deductions based on any non-compliance with the rules and regulations, including the canoe’s inability to pass the flotation test and the usage of non-approved repair materials and procedures. The flotation, or swamp test, requires the canoe to break the surface of the water after being filled completely with water. It’s purpose is to ensure that the canoe will be able to be recovered if it becomes submerged during the competition.

Cutaway Section – A full-scale cutaway model section representative of both the raw and finished canoe shall be presented alongside the canoe. At least 3 feet of the cutaway section shall demonstrate the concrete casting, finishing, and reinforcement techniques used. The cutaway section shall also show the mold, however, it does not count towards the required length of the cutaway section. No additional pictures or text shall be included with the exception of labels properly identifying specific construction elements of the cutaway section. No artistic enhancements are permitted.

Product Display – The tabletop display will convey information regarding how the team constructed their canoe and mold. The goal is to illustrate and describe the processes related to the design, research, planning, development, and construction of the canoe. It shall display samples of concrete aggregate, concrete cylinders, raw reinforcement samples, a copy of the Design Paper, and a copy of the Engineer’s Notebook. A bill of materials and production cost estimate will also be included on the display. Additionally, a safety analysis of one task completed during the construction of the canoe is to be displayed.
