Team

Jeremy Chopp
Jeremy is a Senior Civil Engineering major at The College of New Jersey where he is involved in different aspects of campus life. Jeremy is the Secretary of his fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and also the Treasurer for the TCNJ Civil Engineering Honor Society. He is also a Student Worker in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs on campus. This past summer, Jeremy interned at  Stantec in Mt. Laurel, NJ where he helped work on several projects in the Traffic/Highway Transportation Infrastructure Department.

As team leader of the project, Jeremy will be responsible for the finances and scheduling of the project as well as understanding the Rules & Regulations of the 2019 ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition. He will also take the lead in the formation of the proposals, presentations, and reports required by both TCNJ and the ASCE competition. Jeremy will be overseeing all aspects of the project including the structural analysis and the construction process of the canoe.
Taylor Barrett
Taylor Barrett is a member of the team and a member of the mix design team. Taylor will be in charge of designing a concrete mix that is durable and will create the final mix used to spray on the canoe mold during construction. Taylor is a senior civil engineering major and on the Varsity field hockey team. She also holds a leadership position as the Community Service Chair for the TCNJ Honors Society.

Nicole Byrne
Nicole is a civil engineering senior from Mahwah, NJ. She serves as Communications Chair for the Civil Engineering Honor Society and is involved in a sorority on campus. Over the summer she interned at McLaren Engineering Group in the structures department.

In the fall semester, Nicole will test and design various concrete mixes. She is responsible for designing a concrete mix that is capable of floating in water. This will be determined through extensive research and various laboratory experiments. In the spring semester, Nicole will create the final concrete mix design that is to be used to create the canoe.
Jack Hofmann
Jack is a Senior Civil Engineering major at The College of New Jersey who has been involved in all aspects on campus over the past 3 years. Jack is a founding father and President of the AWWA Club (TCNJ Chapter), Vice-President of NSPE (TCNJ Chapter), and Community Outreach Chair for the TCNJ ASCE Chapter.  For two years, he served as a Community Advisor (CA) on campus for Res Ed and Housing and was Senator for the School of Engineering in Student Government. This past summer, Jack interned with Hardesty and Hanover. Jack helped with several projects in Transportation Engineering and Water Resources Engineering.

Jack is responsible for the hull design of the concrete canoe. He will use a computer program to create several designs for the hull of the boat and decide on the optimal design. The hull design includes the rocker, gunwale thwarts, and tumblehome. Based on the analysis of the hull, the most advantageous design will be chosen for the team’s canoe.
Robert Klemt
Robert is a senior Civil Engineering major who is President of NSPE, and a part of Phi Alpha Delta.  He has interned with companies such as Suez, Hammer Land Engineering, and recently Waters & Bugbee Inc.

Robert is responsible for the structural analysis and design of the hull.  This is to ensure that the chosen design strength is sufficient for competition.  It is essential to analyze the strength of the canoe to ensure that it can hold the load of the 4 team members for the race. The designs that pass the structural analysis will be considered for the final design.
