Project

bridge

Our senior project includes the geotechnical and hydrological design of the Monmouth County Bridge MA-14. This bridge is in Monmouth County, New Jersey on West Front Street and Amboy Avenue. It crosses over the Matawan Creek and is located in the Township of Aberdeen. The existing structure was built in 1915 and according to the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) is considered Functionally Obsolete and Structurally Deficient. This bridge experiences flooding during high tide and large storm events. Due to the fact that the Matawan Creek is salt water, the steel along the bridge is severely corroded. A large amount of sediment has also been washed out from behind the retaining walls and built up on the opposite sides. The concrete on the current foundation has large cracks and has fallen off completely in some sections. In the areas in which the concrete is missing, the reinforcement is exposed and has also begun to corrode due to the salt water. For these reason, replacement of the bridge is required.

For our project a hydrological and geotechnical design will be completed. The hydrological design will consist of an analysis of tidal charts along the watershed as well as determining scour. The geotechnical design will include a soil improvement design, an embankment design for the approaching roadway, a retaining wall design, and a deep foundation design.
