April 2018

During April, the team made improvements from the presentation in March. The verified exercise and heating components were attached to the headpiece and the remaining verification studies were completed. The IRB was accepted for validation testing. The validation studies followed the last of the verification testing. The final presentation, along with the final report, were updated and presented during the end of the month.


March 2018

During March, the team planned to finish a poster by the third week in order to present verification results at NEBEC. The best option for the headpiece was ordered. The remaining components were added and experimentally tested in order to create the poster. The NEBEC poster included the introduction, other available options, design inputs, the prototype, calibrated temperature sensor data, temperature within the required range, and fit verification. The force of the resistive bands was tested after the presentation and added to the final design report. By the end of the month, the team presented the initial design.


February 2018

During February, the team continued revisions of the initial draft for the Institutional Review Board. During the second week of February, project building started consisting of the exercise, heating, and headpiece components. The team collectively decided to make slight changes to verification protocol prior to IRB submission from the first semester report, in order to simplify the verification process. An updated timeline for the following months was also created to ensure the prototype is finished, along with testing. At the end of the month, the team reviewed the abstract for NEBEC and completed the FDA decision agreement. The final report was also started and updated throughout February from the first semester.


January 2018

During January, the team received a majority of the ordered parts. Additionally, the NIH protection of human subject research participants was completed for an IRB. An initial draft to the Institutional Review Board was completed. In late January, the team discussed how the materials should be incorporated into the design and started assembling the device.


November 2017

During November, the team started with the preliminary design presentation. After presenting, the team began writing a rough draft of the project report. Multiple materials were chosen for the design solutions and budget approximations were created for the two devices. SolidWorks models of the two devices were created. The rough draft of the report and semester presentation was prepared for December. The team supported one of the designs more than the other options. The final presentation and initial report were completed before planning for winter break.


October 2017

During October, the team had a meeting to better understand the machine shop resource. With possible design solutions already considered, everyone created one or two designs to meet the requirements and solve the given problem statement from September. The team chose the two best options and began creating the initial rough draft of the November presentation. The presentations included the initial problem statement, five requirements, five specifications, justifications, verifications, design solution matrices, and alternative design solutions.


September 2017

During September, the team decided between two options for the project. The team thought designing a device for TMJD was best, since only three main devices are on the market and none of the options take into consideration the resistive jaw opening exercise accepted by physical therapists. Using this as the basis of the project, the team decided on five initial requirements to present and discuss. The five initial requirements were eventually finalized, along with five specifications. During the third week of the project, with requirements and specifications complete, the team began thinking of possible design solutions to satisfy the given requirements. After considering multiple ideas, realistic constraints were formed. After acknowledging the limitations of the device, standards were introduced.
