Heating Component

The device must be able to firmly apply heat to the masseter muscles and temporomandibular joint. The device must raise skin temperature to 42 ± 3 ℃ within 3 minutes and maintain it for 15 minutes.

Physiology texts have stated that vasodilation increases oxygen uptake and metabolism for up to 20 minutes of heat application. TMJD patients are most sensitive to heat at 42 ℃. Heating skin temperature over 47 ℃ is no longer beneficial and may harm the patient. A microcontroller will be used to regulate heat output.

Design Solution: The Adafruit heating source is a 10 by 5 centimeters, compatible with 5-12VDC sources, and provides detailed tables containing voltage, current, and temperature data. The heating source will be cut and re-soldered so that it is has the appropriate resistance to heat to the desired temperature.
